Ocracoke Update:  Life without a highway
January 21, 2008

An update on the bridge project in pictures

Hyde County Emergency Manager Tony Spencer took these photographs of the project to replace seven bridges along Highway 12 on Ocracoke.  During the project, which is scheduled to be finished on March 15, Highway 12 traffic is being re-routed onto the beach for about three miles.  Four-wheel-drive vehicles only are allowed on the detour. And even then, a DOT contractor, Jarvis Williams of Cape Point Exxon in Buxton, spends time hauling vehicles that get stuck in the sand off the beach.  Hyde County Emergency Medical Services has special four-wheel-drive vehicles on loan to carry patients through the beach detour to meet other EMS vehicles on the other side for the ferry trip across Hatteras Inlet.
