Lady Canes advance in state playoffs
By JORDAN TOMBERLIN

- After
last Friday’s victory over Jamesville in the final game of the
Tideland Athletic Conference tournament, the top-seeded Lady Hurricanes
(20-3) prepared to square off against the Mattamuskeet Lady Lakers
(11-6) at home on Monday in the first round of the NCHSAA State
Playoffs.
The Hurricanes had met and defeated the Lakers three times throughout
the course of the season, and their fourth meeting proved no
different.
The Hurricanes took a commanding lead right from the start, and the
Lady Lakers simply weren’t able to keep up. Well into the
third quarter, the Lady Lakers had still had scored only four points to
the Hurricanes’ 52.
The Lakers tried to come back in the fourth quarter with a brief run in
which they scored the majority of their 23 points, but the Canes
couldn’t be stopped.
Led by Paxton Gwin (13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists) , Jessica
Bierlein (14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists), Kristian Head (13 points,
2 assists), and Lauren Randall (10 points, 8 rebounds, 4
assists), the Canes cruised to a 77-23 victory, beating the Lady
Lakers by an astounding 54 points.
On Wednesday, at home, the Hurricanes will take on the winner between
Ayden-Grifton and South East Halifax, ranked numbers two and three in
their respective conferences, in the second round of the playoffs.
