The children of the Hatteras United
Methodist Charge enthusiastically performed an Easter mini-musical,
"Hallelujah He Did It!" on Sunday, March 16, at the Hatteras United
Methodist Church. More than 100 members of the local community came
out to support the children.
The play, originally written by Pamela Clampitt Vandewalker, was
adapted to incorporate drama, singing, and dancing to celebrate the
resurrection of Jesus Christ. Twenty-five children, ranging from 3
to 10 years old, from Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras villages
worked very hard to learn speaking parts, musical solos, and
interpretive dancing for the four-scene play.
Every Sunday evening, beginning in February, the children gathered at
the Hatteras United Methodist Church for a 1 1/2-hour practice. The
practices would not have been possible without the resounding support
of parents and adults. Nicole Fairbanks of Frisco and Ann Woods of
Buxton served as drama directors. Kate Pullen and Sherri Smith of
Buxton coached the music team. Neil and Angela Tawes of Buxton worked
tirelessly to fill any need that arose -- including audio/visual
management and "crowd control." Kate Pullen also served as play
director. Two Cape Hatteras Secondary School students, Brianna James of
Buxton and Melanie Dambach of Frisco, served as dance team leaders.
Other Cape Hatteras Secondary students who volunteered their time were
Bailey Gray, who served as a stand-in during drama practice, and
Rheanna Miller and Alana Harrison, who provided baby-sitting services.
At the end of each Sunday practice, members of the community provided
dinner for the children. Food was provided by Rosa Alice Mayo, Analee
Bibbey, Debbie Hodge, Neil and Angela Tawes, Anna Merrill, and Rocco's
Pizza. The Sunday performance was followed by a dessert social, with
goodies provided by all of the participants and their families. It was
a sweet tooth paradise!
Linda O'Neal, secretary of the Hatteras United Methodist Charge,
designed the bulletins and certificates for the evening. Bob Boyer of
Frisco provided the audio. The event was also made possible through the
unwavering support of the Hatteras UM Charge pastor, the Rev. Cory
Oliver.
A love offering to support the ongoing Hatteras United Methodist Charge
Children's Music and Drama Program was collected at the end of the
evening. More than $400 was raised to support future programs.
Look for this group of budding singers, dancers, and actors in the
summer and winter as more productions are on the way!
