Water line replacement at Hatteras village nears completion
Replacement
of a 12-inch water supply line along Highway 12 north of Hatteras
village is expected to be completed by Friday, June 12, with no
interruption of service to customers.
Two water lines supply water to customers on the island, an eight-inch
pipe and the 12-inch pipe. A leak was detected in the 12-inch pipe, and
the break was isolated on May 21. Work began immediately.
``The 12-inch water line being installed along Highway 12 is a
replacement for the 12-inch pipe installed after Hurricane
Isabel,’’ explained Ken Flatt, director of the Dare County
Water Department. ``The leak in the pipe is too deep to be repaired, so
a replacement water main is required.’’
The water lines were placed deep as a precaution to avoid service
interruptions because of hurricanes. The water-line replacement project
is proceeding as scheduled and the contractor expects to complete the
installation by Friday.
Flatt went on to say that the eight-inch water main has been adequately
supplying water service to Hatteras village since the 12-inch water
main break was isolated on May 21.
According to a Dare County press release, the National Park Service has
been “very cooperative” in issuing the special use permit
for the water line installation and the bird closure area is not
affecting the progress of the contractor.
The natural resource closure just outside Hatteras village is for
the protection of American oystercatchers and their chicks.
