The area was temporarily closed in September of last year because of
flooding from Hurricane Irene. After the storm, NPS issued a
special use permit that allowed Dare County officials to use the open,
expansive area as a Hatteras Island collection point for tons and tons
of debris left in Hurricane Irene’s wake.
For several months, contracted truckers hauled debris from across
Hatteras Island to the collection point for eventual removal to the
Bertie County landfill. As a condition of the permit, the

The contractor has since re-seeded the site, repaved the access road,
installed speed bumps, and repaired the road shoulders. Portions
of the re-seeded area may remain closed until new grass is well
