Highway 12 closes briefly after worker is killed

The North Carolina Department of Transportation closed Highway 12 last night for a brief time after an employee was killed in a fatal accident in a work zone.

The highway reopened about 9 this morning.  It is open to four-wheel-drive vehicles only, and travelers are advised to drive with caution through the work areas.

The name of the employee is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

The accident occurred south of the Bonner Bridge in an area where crews were working to remove sand in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the recent northeaster that hit the Outer Banks.

The highway had been closed since it was damaged by the hurricane, and had just been reopened at noon yesterday to four-wheel-drive vehicles only.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol and NCDOT officials are investigating the accident.   No other details are available at this time.

NCDOT's ferries are providing access to Hatteras Island.  For more information visit or call 1-800-293-3779.
