Arrest made in breaking and entering and larceny in Buxton

On Dec. 11, Dare County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported residential breaking and entering at a residence in Buxton, where jewelry and electronics were taken.  Dare Sheriff’s Investigator Doug Oberbeck responded also and began to work the case.  During the course of the investigation, deputies went to a local pawn shop and located several of the stolen items.  Further investigation yielded a suspect.

Ricardo Cantu-Escobedo, 22, of 49289 Highway 12 in Buxton has been charged with breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering. He was committed to the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

Nov. 9, 2012

Suspicious Fire in Buxton: On Nov. 5, a suspicious fire was reported at 47817 Buxton Back Road.  Dare County deputies responded and initiated an investigation.  As a result of their investigation, suspects were developed.  The suspects will be referred to the Juvenile Court system for charging or whatever other appropriate actions they deem necessary.  Investigators found no link to last year’s residential fires in Salvo, or as of now, to the previous fire at the same location.

Vehicle break-ins on Hatteras Island: There have been a number of vehicle break-ins in the Timber Trail area of Frisco, and in the villages of Buxton, Avon and Rodanthe.  The break-ins primarily involve suspect(s) entering unlocked vehicles and garages.  Dare County deputies are currently investigating the cases.  The Sheriff’s Office solicits any information citizens may have regarding these crimes.  We ask that you call the Sheriff’s Office 24-hour number 252-473-3444 or the Dare Community Crime Line at 252-473-3111, it you have information.

DRUG ARREST IN RODANTHE: On Oct. 16, deputies from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and officers from The Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head Police Departments conducted a narcotics investigation that led to the arrest of  Mary Nicole Midgett, 25, of Holiday Boulevard in Rodanthe. She was charged with possession with the intent to sell or deliver Schedule II Oxycodone and possession of drug paraphernalia and was committed to the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $10,500 bond.

Charges dismissed against one person in heroin investigation

On July 13, members of the Dare County Sheriff’s Office arrested four individuals during an investigation of heroin being brought to Hatteras Island.  During a traffic stop, a Dare County Sheriff’s Office K-9 alerted on the vehicle and an amount of heroin and marijuana was located.

According to the office of the Dare County Clerk of the Court, the charges against Danielle Denise Gartelman of Buxton have been dismissed. She had been charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver heroin and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle.

Charges against three other Buxton residents are still pending.  They are:
  • Aaron Zane Gray, 22, 48155 Buxton Back Road, Buxton. Charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver heroin and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana
  • Wyatt Hayes Kennedy, 21, 48155 Buxton Back Road, Buxton. Charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver heroin and Possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.
  • Robin Leah Anderson, 36, 48302 Highway 12, Buxton. Charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver heroin and Possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.

Suspect indicted on charges of statutory rape and indecent liberties with a minor

In July of 2012, The Dare County Sheriff’s Office received information from the Pennsylvania State Police that a victim in their jurisdiction reported to them a sexual assault that occurred in Waves in June 2012.  Sergeant Scott Rodriguez was assigned to the case and began working with investigators in Pennsylvania.  As a result of his investigation, the information was presented to the district attorney.  The district attorney presented the information to the Dare County Grand Jury at its Sept. 10 sitting. 

The Grand Jury indicted Andrew James Czap of Magnelli Lane in Fayette City, Pa., on charges of statutory rape and taking indecent liberties with a child. The indictments were served on the suspect on Sept. 24. He has been released on a $20,000 bond.

Auto Breaking and Entering in Buxton results in two arrests

On Sept. 5, Dare County Deputy David Saffell responded to a larceny in progress call at Cape Point Exxon in Buxton.  He and other deputies encountered a person in the parking lot at the PNC Bank who met the description of the suspect in the call. 

Dare Sheriff’s investigators arrived, and the suspect was detained and investigated.  An item from a vehicle at Cape Point Exxon was recovered, as well as quantities of various controlled substances.  The suspect was accompanied by a female.  Both were charged by deputies.

James Edward Ivey , 44, 225 Flanagan Road, Henderson, N.C., was charged with larceny, possession of stolen property, breaking and entering of auto, simple possession of Schedule II controlled substance,  simple possession of Schedule IV controlled substance (three counts), possession of marijuana up to ounce, possession of drug paraphernalia. He was committed to the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $4,500 bond.

Tammy Champion Loughlin, 48, U.S, Highway 1 Bypass, Henderson, N.C., was charged with breaking and entering of auto, misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana up to ounce, possession with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver Schedule IV controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia. She also was committed to the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $4,500 bond.

Child Molestation Hatteras Island

On July 25, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported child molestation on Hatteras Island.

Investigators were informed that a 35-year-old male had taken inappropriate liberties with an 8-year-old child.  Investigation revealed that the suspect was a guest in the vacation home of the child and was a friend of the child’s father.  All of the persons involved were vacationing from Ohio.  Investigators stopped the 35-year-old man at a location away from the house, continued their investigation, and subsequently charged him with the taking indecent liberties with a child, a felony.

The suspect is identified as Tereso Maximino Almanza, 35, of 6207 Melody Lane, Milford, Ohio. He was committed to the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $15,000 bail.

The following suspects were arrested and charged with the following charges:

  • Danielle Denise Gartelman, 21, 29212 Wild Wood Drive, Buxton. Charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver heroin and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle. Bond was set at $20,000 secured.

Law enforcement searching for missing person on Hatteras

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted by authorities in Ashland, Ohio, regarding a missing person who was last seen in the Salvo area of Hatteras Island on  Wednesday, July 4.

Deputies from the Dare Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and North Carolina State Emergency Response Team are actively looking for the person on the island, utilizing land and air assets and canines. 

The subject of the search has been identified as Lynn Jackenheimer, a white female, 33, of 1615 State Route 603, Ashland.  She was reported missing by Ashland County law enforcement.  She was last heard from around midnight July 3-4. She is believed to have been in the Salvo area at the time. 

Incriminating statements have been made to persons in Ohio that foul play may be involved, according to Ohio authorities.  Ohio authorities are actively looking for Nathaniel Summerfield, a white male, 27, also of Ashland and Jackenheimer’s boyfriend, who is missing as well.  Summerfield was last seen in Ashland on July 8.  Dare County sheriff’s deputies and others previously mentioned are continuing the search for Jackenheimer on Hatteras Island.

Domestic Assault in Buxton: Early Saturday morning, Sgt. Jack Scarborough was ending his tour of duty for the evening.  As he arrived at his residence, he exited his patrol vehicle and heard what he thought was a female screaming.  After closer listening, he determined the screaming to be coming from two different females and a male.  He returned to his patrol vehicle and found a hysterical female in front of a residence on Dippin’ Vat Road in Buxton. This female informed Sgt. Scarborough that her father had assaulted her mother.  Further investigation discovered the victim of a domestic assault in the street, accompanied by her son.  Dare EMS was called and attended to the victim, flying her to Norfolk Sentara Hospital.  Through his investigation, Sgt. Scarborough determined that the alleged perpetrator of the assault was in a residence on Dippin’ Vat. He reportedly was armed.  The suspect was taken into custody without incident. 

Daniel Franklin McCroskey, 36, 47257 Dippin’ Vat Road, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He is being held at the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bond. The investigation is pending and more charges are expected.

Hatteras Island Serious Incidents

There have been a number of vehicle break-ins on Hatteras Island in the last 10 days. 

“This is seasonal, but certainly not acceptable,” according to a Sheriff’s Office media release.”

The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents and visitors to remember to secure their fishing equipment inside and to lock their vehicles.  The vehicles in question were unlocked.

“We have persons of interest in these break-ins and will keep you posted as to their status,” according to the release.

April 19
Traffic stop led to traffic violations and misdemeanor marijuana charges in Avon at Highway 12 and Wahoo Circle.

April 21
Breaking, Entering and Larceny at rental house in Avon on Ocean View Drive. Two televisions, mounting hardware ,and watch stolen.

April 22
Attempted Breaking and Entering at a home in Buxton on Buxton Back Road. No entry made. Damage to window.

April 24
Misdemeanor Breaking and Entering reported at home in Waves in the 25000 block of Highway 12. Nothing stolen or damaged.

HATTERAS ISLAND FELONY INCIDENTS


March 29. BREAKING AND ENTERING/FRISCO. Three calls for house breaking and entering on Snug Harbor Road in Frisco.  Three juvenile suspects developed.  Deputy Gary Kierney will be preparing juvenile petitions for them.
 
March 30.  BREAKING AND ENTERING/MOTEL ROOM/BUXTON. Breaking and entering, larceny from a motel room at Hatteras Island Inn in Buxton. Jewelry missing.   Victim now thinks jewelry may be lost.

March 30.  BURGLARY /AVON (OCCURRED IN FEBRUARY). A victim in Avon reports a burglary that occurred in February, 2012.  Known suspect.  Investigators and victim advocate working case
 
April 3. LARCENY OF MOTORVEHICLE/SALVO. Larceny of Motor Vehicle. Suspect known to victim, vehicle returned. Victim undecided on charges
 
April 4. ATTEMPTED BREAKING AND ENTERING/SALVO. Attempted B&E to rental home, daytime incident, no leads on suspect, nothing taken.

House Fire in Waves.  The Dare County Sheriff’s Office and Dare County fire officials are investigating two fires in the same neighborhood in the Hatteras Island community of Waves.  On Sunday, Feb. 5, at approximately 11:23 p.m., a fire was reported at 25215 Sea Vista Drive in Waves.  Local fire departments responded and extinguished the fire.  The dwelling was severely damaged.  On Thursday, Feb. 9, at approximately 1 a.m., another fire was reported at 25216 Midgett Way, Waves.  Local fire departments again responded and extinguished the fire.  The dwelling was destroyed. Fire and law enforcement Investigators are investigating both fires.  It has not been determined at this time if the two fires are related. Both houses were unoccupied and no one was injured in the incidents.

Possession of Narcotics/Buxton:  On Jan. 22, deputies from the Dare County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit initiated a traffic stop on the Buxton Back Road in Buxton.  The stop was part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.  As a result of the stop, deputies located a quantity of Oxycodone.  Charges were brought against David Kelly Morrison, 46, Buxton Back Road. He was charged with possession with the intent to sell or deliver Oxycodone and maintaining a vehicle for the keeping or selling of a controlled substance. He was committed to the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $225,000 bond.
