Fire destroys two soundfront houses in Avon

By IRENE NOLAN

An early morning fire on Tuesday destroyed two soundfront houses on Portside Drive in Avon.

According to Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs, the call about the fire came in about 1:27 a.m.  Kovacs said a Dare County Sheriff's Office deputy who arrived on the scene, which was in Kinnakeet Shores, reported one house fully engulfed by fire and another partially on fire.

In addition to the Sheriff's Office, and the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, a number of other first responders were on the scene, according to Kovacs.  They included the Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras volunteer fire departments, and Dare County Emergency Medical Services.

Although it rained much of the day on Monday, a cold front passed through the area in the evening.  The rain stopped and the wind picked up from the north.  The gusty wind, Kovacs said, was blowing around the embers, making the fire more difficult for the firefighters to contain.

However, Kovacs added that there was an empty lot to the south of the two houses that burned, which helped firefighters.

Kovacs said the two houses were both rentals, and neither one was occupied at the time of the fire.

The fire, however, was spectacular enough that folks living on southern Hatteras Island in Buxton and Frisco could see the glow on the northeast horizon.

No one was injured fighting the fire, Kovacs said.

"There is no known cause at this time," Kovacs said.  "The fire in under investigation."
