UPDATE: Scott White withdraws
from race for Hatteras commissioner

By IRENE NOLAN

Scott White of Rodanthe today announced that he has withdrawn his candidacy for Dare County Commissioner District 4, which includes all of Hatteras Island.

White, a Republican filed early for the seat, before incumbent Allen Burrus, a Democrat from Hatteras village, announced he would not seek re-election.  After Burrus made his announcement, Democrat Danny Couch of Buxton, a member of the Dare County Board of Education, announced that he would seek the District 4 seat on the Board of Commissioners instead of running again for his seat on the school board.

White's announcement today was addressed to "the people of Hatteras Island and Dare County."

"Out of respect for the political process and the people of Hatteras Island," he said, "I have withdrawn my candidacy for the Dare County Commissioner District 4 seat. After careful consideration and a long discussion with my wife, we have decided it would be better  for me to take a step back and get to know the people of Hatteras Island and Dare county better before I just get to know them because I need their vote."

White, who moved to Hatteras Island in 2010, has never run for public office before.  However, he said in today's announcement that he will not rule out running for office in the future.

"My goals in the future will be to get involved with the community and get in touch with the folks on Hatteras Island,” he said. “I want to know them as people, not just a number.

White also said he wished the "best of luck" to Couch.

"I wish Danny Couch and family the best of luck in all of their endeavors," he said, "and I hope he will be a commissioner for the people of Hatteras Island, not for the establishment."
