2015:  The Year on Hatteras and Ocracoke in Photos

Island Free Press photographer Don Bowers of Buxton spent some time combing through his files of the hundreds of photographs that he took on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands during 2015.

He chose 37 of them to share with our readers in this slide show.

The year 2015 is not unusual in that many of the newsy photos are from weather-related events --  the cold winter with frozen harbors and snow on the dunes, flooding from record-breaking rainfall in coastal storms in early October,  the angry surf in northeasters, kiteboarding in an early-season tropical storm.

Others are related to our beautiful night skies -- September's Super Blood Moon, the Milky Way over Frisco Pier, lightning over the Pamlico Sound.

Others are photos we are used to seeing -- anglers flocking to Cape Point when it reopens after bird and turtle nesting season, running to raise money for the island's cancer patients, local  entertainers, shipwrecks on the beach, and the annual rites of graduation and the blessing of the fleet.

Then there are the just plain beautiful-to-behold photos of shadows and sunsets and lighthouses.

We hope you enjoy the photos.

If you have some of your own favorite island photos, send them to us and we will post them on the website or on our Facebook page.  Send them to [email protected].

And Happy New Year to all of you from all of us at The Island Free Press.
