Prescribed burn on Pea Island Refuge set for Friday, April 15

U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service District Fire Management Officer Bert Plante has scheduled a prescribed burn for Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge for Friday, April 15, beginning mid-morning, if weather conditions occur as predicted.

The current forecast is for Friday is for winds of 20-21 mph out of the northeast with relative humidity in the low 60'.

"These conditions should be perfect to push the fire across the prescribed area and push smoke away from the highway and out over the sound," Plante said.

The area planned for the burn is the strip of shrubs and brush on the west side of  Highway 12 between the highway and New Field Pond.  The burn may extend further south to include the same strip between South Pond and Highway 12.
