Fire at Pop's Raw Bar snarls traffic in Buxton

A fire that was reported at 5:03 p.m. at Pop's Raw Bar and Grill on Highway 12 just across from Buxton Harbor had traffic on Highway 12 at a standstill in both directions for almost three hours last evening.

According to Jeffrey Del Monte, deputy chief of the Buxton Volunteer Fire Department,  Buxton firefighting crews responded to the call and were assisted by the Frisco Volunteer Fire Department, Dare County Emergency Medical Service, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, and the Dare County Fire Marshall.

The building was occupied at the time that the fire broke out. However, everyone inside the building was able to get out, and there have been no reported injuries.

As of 7:00 p.m. southbound traffic was backed up past the Buxton Post Office and almost to Buxton Village Books -- a lot of cars were turning around and giving up.

As of 7:30 p.m., crews were working to reopen Highway 12, which had to be closed in both north and southbound directions because of the fire -- reportedly because the fire hydrant is on the west side of Highway 12 and the bar is on the east. Hoses were strung across the road.

The incident is still ongoing, and damage to the building is significant. At one point, there was lots of smoke and fire showing through the roof and even under the front deck. The fire was being fanned by gusty northeast winds.

At this point, the cause of the fire in unknown.

More details will be published on the Island Free Press website as we receive them.
