Hatteras Island Highlights from Dare County BOC Meeting

The Dare County Board of Commissioners (BOC) covered a number of issues that affected Hatteras Islanders at their November 6 meeting in Manteo.

Topics which pertained to the island and local community included the following.

Buxton Beach Nourishment Update

Haiqing Kaczkowski of Coastal Science and Engineering provided an update regarding the Buxton Beach Nourishment Project. She reported that approximately 46% of the project has been completed so far. The hopper dredge ‘R.N. Weeks’ is currently assigned to the project, and a new, larger dredge ‘Magdalene’ is expected to arrive in January. Work will continue whenever weather allows, non-stop through the holidays. Weeks Marine is expected to submit a written request for a contract extension and now estimate that they can complete the project in February 2018. Click here to view a .PDF copy of the presentation. For updated information regarding the Buxton project, including a map showing the current construction zone, visit MoreBeachToLove.com.

Update on the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary

David Alberg and Tane Casserley with the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary provided an update regarding recent studies that show that underwater terrain near shipwrecks is 5 to 6 times more productive for fishing than artificial reefs.

Policy Approved to Allow Participation in Parks and Rec Programs

Commissioners approved a policy to allow people from other counties to participate in Dare County recreational activities. Out-of-county participants will pay an additional fee and no out-of-county requests will be accepted if enrollment is limited and the request would keep a Dare County resident from participating. Contact your local Parks and Recreation Office for more information.

Board Discusses Plans for 2018

Commissioners held a workshop at the end of the meeting to discuss plans for 2018.

Topics included inlet maintenance, beach nourishment, garbage collection, affordable housing, and future class offerings at the COA - Dare Campus.
