seven--pound, two- ounce Red Drum was the largest fish caught in the
annual Bob Bernard Open Individual Surf Fishing Tournament on Saturday,
November 4. The large fish was caught by Timothy Taheri of Herndon,
The Bob Bernard tournament concluded the 60th
Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament held
annually the first week of November. The Bob Bernard Open Individual
Tournament is named in honor of Bob Bernard, who officiated as
weighmaster for this tournament for many years. He also served on the
Board of Directors of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club from 1983 through
1991, as Vice President in 1985 and President in 1986 and 1987.
Additional 2017 winners were Al Ritter of Atlanta
GA with a one-pound, 8 ounce Flounder, Rob Jordan of Chesapeake VA, a
one-pound, 12 ounce Bluefish; and a tie between Sam Thornton and Candis
George, both of Nags Head, each pulling in a Sea Mullet that weighed
one-pound, four ounces.
Neil Wood, age 10, of Elizabeth City won in the
Youth Division for anglers through age 12 with a Sea Mullet that
weighed in at one-pound, two ounces.
A total of 71 adults and six youngsters under age
12 competed in the tournament. Each winner was awarded a trophy and $50
gift certificate, courtesy of Frank and Fran’s Tackle Shop in Avon.
