1-3 Inches of Snow Headed to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands

Up to three inches of snow is now forecast for the islands, per the Wednesday afternoon update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.

2-3 inches is forecast for all of Hatteras Island in the latest briefing, and 1-2 inches is forecast for Ocracoke.

The transition from rain to snow is expected this evening from west to east across the region, with hazardous travel conditions likely through mid-morning Thursday.

The timing of the transition to snow has been pushed back in the latest briefing as well, with the changeover from rain to snow expected to occur sometime between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Heavy snow and wind may cause whiteout conditions along the coast tonight, and icy conditions will linger Thursday morning until temperatures rise above freezing by mid-morning. Gale force winds and rough seas over the waters are also forecast.

Dare County schools will be closed on Thursday, January 18, as a result of the approaching winter storm.

All Dare County offices and facilities will be delayed until 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 18. Dare County Public Works will assess road conditions on Thursday morning to determine whether service can safely be provided for customers in Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. Again, this will be contingent on road conditions and if provided, pick-ups will be delayed.

All court sessions scheduled for Dare County on Thursday, January 18 have been cancelled. New court dates will be set and notifications for the new court dates will be mailed on Monday, January 22. If you have any questions concerning a court date, you may call the Dare County Clerk of Court’s Office at 252-475-5200 or check the web at http://www1.aoc.state.nc.us/www/calendars/CriminalQuery.html.

Dare County Transportation has also cancelled all scheduled service for Thursday.

Hyde County Government Offices will open at 12 p.m. on Thursday.
