Flash Flood Watch in Effect; 2-3 Inches of Rain Forecast

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the majority of eastern North Carolina, including Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, per the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.

2-3 inches of rain is currently forecast for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands through Tuesday, with locally heavier amounts possible.

Tropical moisture will stream into the region during this timeframe, which is indirectly associated with the tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition, soils are quite saturated from recent rains, as May is running well above normal rainfall for many locations of eastern North Carolina.

The National Weather Service reports that due to these conditions, it will be fairly easy for excessive rain to cause at least minor flood issues.

The Eastern N.C. area will also remain in an unsettled weather pattern for most of the upcoming week, as the moist air mass remains in place.
