Lighthouse is Beaming Again After Quick Repair

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is back to beaming again after a quick Tuesday repair by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse went unintentionally dark at some point over Memorial Day weekend, but Boone Vandzura, the National Seashore’s Chief Ranger for the Cape Hatteras Group, reports that it was shining again in time for the Tuesday evening full moon tour.

Vandzura says that an electrician mate with the U.S. Coast Guard replaced the daylight control mechanism, which fixed the problem.

“We appreciate the U.S. Coast Guard’s quick response and repair of the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse,” said Vandzura.

This is the second time that the lighthouse has ceased operations in 2018, as it suffered damage in January after a wave of winter storms, and remained dark for more than a month due to repairs that required built-from-scratch replacement parts. This time, the light was only out of commission for several days at most.
