A vacationing New Jersey state trooper is being hailed for rescuing a woman who got caught in a rip current off Hatteras Island over the weekend.

New Jersey State Police announced in a Facebook post Trooper Craig Kempinski was alerted by his wife that the woman had been pulled approximately 200 yards offshore on Saturday.

“Trooper Kempinski resorted to his water rescue training, and used a (body)board to navigate the hazardous current to the victim,” according to the post.

Kempinski gave the exhausted woman the board to keep her afloat, and a stand-up paddleboarder helped the pair get back to shore.

“Despite swallowing some water and being exhausted, emergency personnel determined she didn’t sustain any injuries,” according to the post.
