Mirlo 100th Anniversary Celebration Kicks
off with Cedar Shake Art Exhibit
Chicamacomico Historical Association and Dare County Arts Council is
co-hosting an art exhibit at the DCAC Gallery in Manteo throughout the
month of August to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the famous 1918
As part of its efforts to restore the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station,
CHA has carefully replaced and preserved older cedar shakes that were
salvaged from the 1911 station in recent years. Artists from all across
the Outer Banks were recently invited to use the shakes from the
station, and transform them into unique works of art.
The resulting painted shakes are part of a 100-piece art exhibit that
first debuted on August 3, 2018. On Monday night, August 13, DCAC and
CHA will host a special Opening Reception for artists and buyers to
celebrate the Mirlo anniversary, and to allow visitors to meet and
greet with the contributing artists in the project. The reception on
Monday night is open to the public, and begins at 6 p.m. at the DCAC
Gallery in Manteo.
Visitors who are unable to make the Monday night reception can also
view the exhibit at their leisure, which will be available to the
public until August 25, 2018. The 100 shakes are also available to
purchase at the DCAC Gallery.
