National Seashore Updates for the Week of October 4




The Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) announced several recent updates related to beach driving and recreational activities on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Changes related to the National Seashore for the week of October 4 include the following:

  • Columbus Day (October 8) is the last day of the 2018 season to climb the Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras Lighthouses.
  • Cape Point Campground loops C, D, E, F, G, and H reopened on October 1. This year’s camping season ends the Monday after Thanksgiving.
  • On the morning of October 20, the public is invited to take a short drive north of the National Seashore to attend the grand reopening ceremony for the Wright Brothers National Memorial visitor center in Kill Devil Hills. The ceremony and ribbon-cutting event will begin at 9:30 a.m.
  • All Cape Hatteras National Seashore facilities are open on Ocracoke Island, and the Hatteras/Ocracoke ferry is running again using the fall ferry schedule. Visit the NCDOT Ferry Division website for the full schedule.
