All Seasonal ORV Routes Open, and Other National
Seashore Updates for the Week of October 16
Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) announced several recent updates
related to beach driving and recreational activities on Hatteras and
Ocracoke Islands. Changes related to the National Seashore for the week
of October 16 include the following:
seasonal off-road vehicle routes were reopened on Monday, October 15.

North Carolina Department of Transportation recently announced that
they were establishing a temporary traffic management plan for the
north end of Ocracoke Island in order to fully repair dunes along N.C.
Highway 12 that were damaged during Hurricane Florence. The temporary
plan went into effect on Monday. The project is scheduled to be
completed by the end of next month.
Saturday morning, October 20, islanders are invited to take a short
drive north of the Seashore to attend the free grand reopening event
for the Wright Brothers National Memorial visitor center in Kill Devil
Hills. A ribbon cutting ceremony will follow speeches by National Park
Service Southeast Regional Director Robert Vogel and Superintendent
All four Seashore campgrounds are open. This year’s camping season ends the Monday after Thanksgiving.
