NCBBA Announces Red Drum Tournament Final Results

The North Carolina Beach Buggy Association held their 10th Anniversary Red Drum Tournament between Ramps 23 and 43 on the beaches of Hatteras Island from October 24 to 27. The Tournament had 325 participants, the most since 2010, and all appeared to enjoy themselves despite one day of challenging weather. Frank and Fran’s in Avon was once again the Tournament Headquarters.

Over $10,000 in cash and prizes was distributed to winners in thirteen of the fourteen categories. Anglers Placing 1st and 2nd both caught red drum measuring 48 inches. Bob Carson was declared the winner based on time caught and Travis Kemp earned second place. Third Place went to Richard Kosa with a 47.6 inch red drum, and Jean Griffin had the largest red drum in the ladies division.  A total of 29 red drum were caught and measured, of which 12 caught and released were over 40 inches. Awards were also given in the sea mullet and bluefish categories.

The co-chairmen of the Tournament were Lee Barrett and Bill King. The head judge was George Mood with Bobby Halstead as assistant head judge, who along with Lee Barrett and Chris Worthington, directed the 40+ volunteer judges who worked the beaches measuring the anglers’ catches. Margaret Mood handled the record keeping.

Klub Kuru in Avon was the venue for this year's banquet.  The anglers and guests enjoyed the program and the food catered by Topside Catering of Camden, N.C. Several tournament sponsors and vendors were present with display tables, which were a well visited addition this year. Preparations are already underway for next years'  tournament  with a great deal of excitement about a proposed team division, which will be limited to a predetermined number on a first come basis, with applications being accepted beginning in early 2019. Details will be published as they become available.

In addition to the following sponsors, the Board of Directors and the RDT committee wish to thank over 70 supporters who purchased ads in our tournament book, and the 22 boosters who contributed to make the Red Drum Tournament possible and successful.
