Beach detour affects movement of Dolphins
You
might be surprised to learn that the Ocracoke Dolphins were affected by
the beach detour this winter. Then again, it was also their first year
with the opportunity to play in an area conference and be recognized on
the all-conference teams.

Dolphins – the boys' and girls' high school basketball teams that just

2 1/2 months this winter, travel to Ocracoke from Hatteras will be the
way it used to be before a highway was built more than 50 years ago.

13 or so miles to and from the Hatteras Inlet ferry from Jan. 2 until

day of the beach detour goes smoothly
Highway
12 on Ocracoke Island is closed until March 15 for the replacement of
seven bridges over the island’s creeks. The traffic is
being routed onto the beach – four-wheel-drive only – and
the first day went smoothly with only a few travelers having to be
towed out of the sand.
