CHSSCS varsity women’s soccer season has officially begun

The Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies varsity women’s soccer season has officially begun. There are 18 to 20 women coming out to play for the team. Coach Paul Rosell is expecting good things to happen this year. The seniors and juniors on the team are the girls that helped start this team three years ago.

In the past, the team has played with determination and zeal, many times with no substitutes on the bench, even with only nine or 10 players on the field versus the 11 typically required.

Returning for the Lady Canes are seniors Jessica Bierlein, Danielle Heinz, Heather Woods, Kelly Mueller, and Sara Cashman. Juniors include Kristian Head, Lauren Kostich, Brianne Rosell, and Morgan Greenwood. Sophomores Tori Ballance and Julianna Martinez return again this year. New to the team are Freshman Rheana Miller, Melanie Dambach, Jessea Midgett, Sarah Tokazowski, Rachel Bibbey, and Tricia Cutler. Coaches Luis Martinez and Paul Rosell are anticipating an exciting season.

The first home game will be played at the Hurricane soccer field on the Buxton Back Road on Monday, March 17, at 5 p.m. The coaches urge all to come out and support school athletics and have a good time too!

CHSSCS sophomore makes NCBA Eastern District Honors Band

Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies sophomore Brad  Brad Dunnagan qualified to perform with the NCBA Eastern District Honors Band.  "Brad made the 9th and 10th band, earning the right to return with 12 other trumpets across the entire eastern district to participate in the February 1 and 2 band clinic at East Carolina University," said CHSSCS band director Sean McCroskey. The clinic will consist of two days of rehearsals under a guest conductor and will culminate in a concert Saturday night at ECU's Wright Auditorium.

Dare County Schools to launch parental notification system

To quickly contact parents/guardians in the event of a school emergency, Dare County Schools plans to use an auto-dialer system that has the capacity to send up to two phone messages and up to two e-mails for each student and staff member in the district.

On Nov. 26, following Thanksgiving break, forms were distributed to every student to be returned to school no later than Dec. 3. The forms, in English and in Spanish, will also be available at each school, Dare County Schools Central Office, and on the Dare County Schools Web site. Following a window of time for data entry, DCS anticipates testing the system on Monday, Dec.17, 2007.

“We are always looking for ways to improve communication between home and school,” said Superintendent of Schools Sue Burgess. “We are especially pleased to have the technology that enables us to automatically contact parents to provide emergency and other important school information. We hope many parents will choose to take advantage of this voluntary opportunity and will work with their children’s schools to keep their contact information updated.”

Even though the initial submission deadline was Dec. 3, Burgess noted, contact information can be received at any time to accommodate changes in phone numbers and email addresses throughout the school year, and will be requested for each student on an annual basis.
