John (Jack) Michael  Hebenstreit


FRISCO– Jack  M. Hebenstreit passed away on Jan. 13, 2010, just shyofhis  83rd birthday at Sentara Nursing Home in Barco, N.C.

Heis survived by his wife of more than 30 years, BarbaraSatterthwaite-Hebenstreit; six children from a previous marriage:Christopher Hebenstreit, Pat Beltz, and Nancy Tallman of Lakewood,Colo., and Ellen Cuffari, Stephen Hebenstreit, and Susan Mitchell ofthe Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania, and nine grandchildren. He ispredeceased by a sister, Ann Margraff, and a brother, CharlesHebenstreit.

Bornand raised in Philadelphia, Jack spent his early years in the WPA arteducation program at the Philadelphia.Museum of Art. He graduated fromNortheast High School. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in theSouth Pacific and Japan during World War II and reaching the rank ofFirst Class Signalman. He studied at the Hussian School of Art and alsostudied for three years at the Barnes Foundation, which houses the mostcomprehensive display of impressionists and modern painters in theworld. He was an art director at RCA Service Co. in NewJersey. He later had his own art and design studio with an associate,Considine-Hebenstreit, in Philadelphia, for 35 years.  He wasapart-time teacher at the Hussian School of Art and the Print Club inPhiladelphia. He taught drawing and painting along with design layout.

Aftermoving to Frisco 20 years ago, he taught evening adult watercolorclasses for the College of the Ablemarle’s continuing educationat Cape Hatteras High School and also gave private lessons. He was awell-known watercolorist and exhibited his work in numerous art showsin Dare County. Jack was an avid fisherman and wrote a fishing columnfor The Island Breeze newspaper. He was also an accomplished poet. Hewas a member of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club.

Therewill be a memorial service on Sat., Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at Little GroveMethodist Church in Frisco. In lieu of flowers, donations may be madeto the Little Grove Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 293, Frisco, NC27936.
