BUXTON — Eldon Mayo Gaskins, 92,crossed the bar into God’s hands surrounded by family on Saturday, July23, 2016 at his home. A native of Hatteras Island, he was the sonof the late Ebbie Gaskins and Rosa Austin Gaskins. A veteran of WorldWar II, Eldon served his country honorably with the 1635th EngineerConstruction Battalion of the United States Army. He subsequently madea successful career in the U.S. Coast Guard in aviation and eventuallyretired as a Chief ADC. Returning to the Outer Banks in 1964, he livedhis ultimate dream as a commercial fisherman for the remainder of hisactive life.
Eldon is survived by his wife, Janet Gray Gaskins; three sons, MikeGaskins and wife, Marion, Steve Gaskins and wife, Rachel, and DavidGaskins and wife, Renae; 11 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.Along with his parents, Eldon was preceded in death by three brothers,Ben, Walton, and Keith Gaskins.
A funeral with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July26, at Lighthouse Assembly of God with Rev. David Waterfield andRev. Dwight Burrus officiating. Burial will take place at the Grayfamily cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at thechurch on Monday evening from 7 until 9 p.m.
