The Worrell 1000 Reunion Race enjoyed a brief but exciting stop on Hatteras Island on May 16-17 as part of the second-to-last leg of their journey up the Eastern Seaboard.

The event is a legendary and challenging 1,000-mile trek that extends from Florida to Virginia Beach, and which includes 11 checkpoints along the way. First launched in 1976, the Worrell Race is back after a 17-year hiatus with three brave competing teams – Team Australia, Team Cat in the Hat, and team TCDYC or “Team Texas.”

The competitors arrived on Hatteras Island on Thursday afternoon, and launched from ORV Ramp 49 in Frisco at 9:55 a.m. on Friday as they made their way towards their next checkpoint in Kill Devil Hills. The day’s venture included one of the most difficult navigation hazards of the entire 1,000-mile route, Cape Point, however all three teams made it around the Point with little trouble.

Island Free Press Photographer Don Bowers captured the action of the Worrell competitors’ Friday morning trek as they headed north from Frisco, and steadily progressed north along the coast of Hatteras Island.
