Snow Forecast for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands Starting Wednesday Afternoon

Share post:

A light snowfall is expected across most of eastern North Carolina, including Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, per the Tuesday morning briefing from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.

As a cold front crosses the region on Wednesday, precipitation will initially fall as rain, with temperatures above freezing. Then, beginning in the early afternoon, rain will change to snow from west to east as temperatures drop below freezing.

With light to moderate snow falling during the evening commute, snow covered roads will likely significantly impact travel. Snow will fall all the way to the Outer Banks by the evening, and will taper off by Wednesday night.

Locally, northern Hatteras Island, (including the tri-villages), is expected to receive 1-2 inches of snow through early Thursday morning, which is a noticeable uptick from Monday afternoon’s briefing. Hatteras village and Ocracoke Island is currently forecast to receive less than an inch of snow during the event.

Rough seas and strong wind gusts are also forecast from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning in all coastal waters.
