A strong, multi-threat coastal low pressure system is expected to impact the Outer Banks beginning Sunday, January 2, through Monday, January 3, bringing the potential for soundside and oceanside flooding, per a Saturday morning update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City Office.
Minor to locally moderate coastal flooding for soundside locations along the Outer Banks are forecast for Monday, with water levels rising 1-3 feet above ground level. Rough surf is expected, and minor ocean overwash is possible from Duck to Cape Hatteras.
Strong north winds will develop on Monday morning with gusts of 40-50 mph along the Outer Banks. Widespread heavy rain is also forecast from Sunday night into Monday morning, with expected rainfall totals of 1.5-2.5 inches, and locally heavier amounts possible. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are also possible Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, and localized flooding due to heavy rain could impact low-lying areas.
