Commission for Working Watermen Reorganizational Meeting Scheduled for October 8
The recently revived Commission for Working Watermen will hold an inaugural reorganizational meeting at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center Building on Monday, October 8, at 7 p.m.
This meeting is the rescheduled date for the initial reorganizational meeting that was originally set for September 13, which had to be cancelled due to Hurricane Florence.
The Commission for Working Watermen, which has not met since 2012, was revived over the summer months thanks to a joint effort by local journalist and researcher Susan West and the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
Though the original commission was never disbanded, new voices from the commercial fishing industry are needed to tackle issues that face the industry on a local and broader level.
“We’re definitely looking for the younger watermen, because we do know that a lot of the older watermen are in other commissions and organizations, and we’re looking forward to hearing a new voice,” said County Commissioner and new Working Waterman Commission point person Steve House in a recent interview.
Applications will be available for potential commission members at the meeting, as well as online.
