It’s that time of year again when local and visiting ladies of all ages don their flashiest pink attire, leave the gents at home, and head out to the Avon Pier with fishing poles in hand – because the annual Fish Like A Girl tournament is coming on October 5.
Celebrating its fifth year in 2019, this increasingly popular fishing tournament that launches from the Avon Pier has become one of the most anticipated tournaments on the island – and it’s all for an exceptionally worthy cause.
This empowering fishing tournament is a part of Koru Village’s “Paint the Village Pink” campaign, and Carolina Brewery’s “Drink Sky Pink” campaign, and the event raises fund for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF), an all-volunteer group that provides support for cancer patients and their families who live on Hatteras Island.
2018’s tournament had more than 200 participants – a record in the multiple-year run – and raised thousands of dollars for the HICF, although there’s ample hope that 2019 will be yet another record-shattering year.
Girls and women can register up to the day of the event online at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4290850, or by stopping by the Avon Pier before the big day to sign up. Entry into the tournament is $30, and includes an event T-shirt while supplies last, as well as a fishing pier pass for the competition.
The competition takes place between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday morning, and there are a number of chances to win an enticing array of prizes, with categories such as biggest fish, most fish, craziest fish, and more. In addition, there’s a prize for the angler who has the pinkest attire, so be prepared to come to the pier decked out in this flashy hue.
Despite the arrival of Hurricane Dorian just a couple of weeks ago, Avon Pier owner Joe Thompson says that the pier house only suffered a few lost shingles, and the pier is ready to go for the annual competition that always attracts a crowd.
“The greatest thing about the event is the level of community participation,” says Thompson. “Everyone knows someone who has breast cancer, or [have been] touched by the effects of breast cancer themselves, and this is an opportunity for folks to give back to the community, and help those who are going through it now.”
Businesses are continually welcome to pitch in and lend a hand through prize or monetary donations, and all visiting and local ladies are welcome to join in the fun – no experience required!
“There’s nothing fancy about it, but it’s always a lot of fun, and people come from all over to fish and have a great time,” says Thompson.
With women participating from all across the Outer Banks, as well as from all across the country, the Fish Like a Girl tournament is always a rowdy mix of mingling, fishing, and having a ball all morning long. (And yes, the men can tag along too.)
