Known locally as “Keeper James,” James D. Charlet will be launching a new virtual presentation series via Zoom. The series title is “America’s Forgotten Heroes.” Each program will consist of the basics of the United States Life-Saving Service and then summaries from one or more of the 24 chapters in his 2020 book, Shipwrecks of the Outer Banks: Dramatic Rescues and Fantastic Wrecks in the Graveyard of the Atlantic, Globe Pequot Press. These stories will also include summaries from his 27-chapter sequel from Globe Pequot, Shipwreck Rescues of the Outer Banks: Sensational Wrecks and Heroic Rescues by the United States Life-Saving Service to be released in April 2025.

James D. Charlet is described as “an authority on the U.S. Life-Saving Service on North Carolina’s iconic Outer Banks. He contributes to local and national media, and hosts Keeper James Presentations TM which is a series of live theater programs. Charlet is also a dedicated advocate for saving the 1898 Oregon Inlet United States Life-Saving Service Station.

James is a 30+ year permanent resident of Hatteras Island, the center of much of the shipwreck-and-rescue activity of the 1871 to 1915 period on the North Carolina coast.

Each program will be 45 to 60 minutes and include a Q&A session. These programs will originate from interested (and interesting) organizations and places from all over America.

The first one is scheduled for Saturday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. It is coming from the Ocean City Life-Saving Service Station Museum in Ocean City, Maryland. The program is free but requires registration to attend. Go to https://www.ocmuseum.org/events/americas-forgotten-heroes-precursor-of-the-us-coast-guard-virtual-presentation, or try this link.
