Annual HICF Chowder Cook-off is landing at Day at the Docks on September 14

Share post:

One of the most popular events at the annual Day at the Docks Festival – the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s (HICF) Chowder Cook-off – is returning once again for this year’s celebration on Saturday, September 14, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

During this highly competitive contest, where bragging rights will last all year, various island restaurants will gather and battle for the 2024 HICF Best Chowder title. (Entries are now being accepted for this year’s contest for restaurants that want to join in the fun.  Please email HatterasIslandCancerFoundation@yahoo.com for more information.)

The tasting fee is $10, and tasters will serve as the all-important judges, sampling all of the entries and voting for their favorites. Best of all, proceeds from every tasting ticket will go to benefit HICF grant recipients. So far, restaurants participating include The Wreck Tiki Bar, Dinky’s, Cafe Pamlico, Tavern on 12, Kat’s Deli, The Froggy Dog, and Breakwater.

Founded in 2000, the HICF provides assistance to local residents dealing with cancer, helping with needs such as travel expenses, prescriptions, and medical bills that are not covered by insurance. Since its inception, the HICF has assisted hundreds of islanders with cancer and their families with grants in excess of $1,000,000.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, the annual Day at the Docks Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 13-14. More details about the event—including a long roster of popular annual activities—will be announced soon.
