Community invited to the Hatteras Island Community Strings’ Spring Concert on April 15
Hatteras Island Community Strings students will host a Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 15, at 6:00 p.m. at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department Station.
The concert will showcase the nearly two dozen students who are receiving lessons with musicians Jessie Taylor and Lou Castro, and will feature a range of instruments including violin, ukulele, and guitar.

Hatteras Island Community Strings (HICS) originated in 2022 after a St. John United Methodist Church (UMC) parishioner donated $10,000 for children to receive free music lessons.
Since then, recitals and concerts were held in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and the popularity of the program made it clear that it was time to take some long-term steps that would allow music lessons to continue for years to come.
At the beginning of 2024, HICS became a nonprofit organization, and a new HICS Board of Directors was also formed to help map out the future of the organization, which includes Taylor, Kelly Williams, Vicki Langhel, and Stephen Day.
In 2025, HICS received a generous grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation, which allowed the organization to expand their program and acquire sound equipment to make their performances even more symphonic.
The April 15 concert is wide open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend this community event where these students’ musical talents will be on full display.
