HATTERAS– Damon Meekins Gray Jr., 89, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, in hisresidence. Mr. Gray was born in Hatteras and was retired from theNational Weather Service as a weather specialist. He was member ofHatteras United Methodist Church, one of the founders of HatterasVolunteer Fire Department, a recipient of the Order of the Long LeafPine, and served in numerous civic activities. Mr. Gray served hiscountry honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awardedfour Bronze Stars and the Silver Star and received a commendation fromthe French service.
He was predeceased by his parents, Damon Meekins Gray Sr. and Rosa Dean Gaskins Gray and his first wife, Alice Austin Gray.
Survivingare his wife, Nola Fletcher Martin Gray; three daughters, Debbie G.Hodge and husband Cliff, Rosa Alice Mayo, and Analee Bibbey and husbandTom, all of Hatteras; one son, Damon Meekins Gray “D.M.”,III and wife,Kristin, of Hatteras; two stepdaughters, Robin Boots of New Hampshireand Diane Martin Kelly of Redway, Calif.; one stepson, Robert EverardMartin of Harrogate, England; two brothers, Ray Gray Sr. and wifeVandetta of Buxton and Hal Gray and wife Mary Lou of Hatteras; hisdaughter-in-law, Peggy Gray; 11 grandchildren, sixstep-grandchildren , seven great-grandchildren, and onestep-grandchild. Besides his first wife, Mr. Gray is predeceased by hisson, Harold Lawrence Gray, and his son-in-law, Gene Mayo.
Acelebration of life will be in Hatteras United Methodist Church onMonday Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Ken Davenport and the Rev.Dwight Burrus.
