BUXTON– Joseph Daniel “Dan” Kavanagh Jr. of Buxton, NC, formerly ofHardyville, VA., passed away May 28, 2014. Dan was born on June 4, 1949in Bay City, MICH., to Joseph Daniel Sr. (deceased) and Alicia (Finn)Kavanagh.
Dan met the love of his life, Regena (Pugh), whileattending Marshall University in Huntington, W.VA., and they weremarried in 1969.
Dan retired as executive director of The MiddlePeninsula Planning District Commission and found more time for his loveof cooking, motorcycle riding, restoration and repair, boat building,hunting, fishing and spending time with family, especially hisgrandchildren. Dan loved the outdoors and his greatest accomplishmentas a public servant was the formation of the Middle PeninsulaChesapeake Bay Public Access Authority for the express purpose ofproviding access to public lands and waterways to the citizens of theMiddle Peninsula, the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.
Inaddition to his father, Dan was preceded in death by his grandson, LeePerry Kavanagh; brothers, William P Kavanagh Sr. and Dudley J KavanaghII; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Kavanagh; and nephew, William P Kavanagh Jr.
Danis survived by his wife, Regena, of Buxton; his sons, Joseph (Natalie)D. Kavanagh III of Frisco and William (Carole) J. Kavanagh of Henrico,Va.; his grandchildren, Joseph IV, Thomas and Patrick of Frisco andCampbell, Carson and Carlie of Henrico, Va.; his special girl andhunting companion, Gypsy; one brother, five sisters and their spouses;a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Acelebration of Dan’s life will be held June 26 in Hatteras with familyand friends.
