MANTEO — Roland Dock Sawyer, Jr., 85, passed away on Tuesday, July 19,2016 at his home. A native of East Lake, he was the son of the lateRoland Dock Sawyer Sr. and Irma Pinner Sawyer, who, because of thesaving grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, welcomed R.D. intoHeaven.
R.D. is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Kay Spies Sawyer; ason, Roland Dock Sawyer III and wife, Robin, of Manteo; agranddaughter, Korie Sawyer; and brother, Byron Sawyer, and wife,Sandra, of Manteo. He is also survived by two step-sons, Thomas P.Daniels and wife, Holly, and Karl B. Daniels and wife, Debby.
A Korean War veteran, R.D. served his country honorably with the UnitedStates Coast Guard. With great respect and honor, he would remember tothank every one of his many co-workers in the family business, R.D.Sawyer Motor Company. R.D. would retain fond memories of the hundredsof customers driving Fords and extend to them a sincerest “thank you.”
R.D. had a multitude of special interestS — his many good friends, Mt.Olivet United Methodist Church, flying, as he was a 1st lieutenant inthe Civil Air Patrol who participated in numerous search missions formissing aircraft, Dare County Airport Authority as a member andchairman, the Lions Club, new cars and restored antique cars, Ocracoke,Maui, Ford Motor Company, his home and his extended family, especiallyKorie, and not to ever forget our Julia, who cares for us forever, andall of his wonderful at-home caregivers.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, at Mt. OlivetUnited Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Manteo Cemetery. Thefamily will receive friends and relatives in the social hallimmediately following the service and all other times at the home, 127Algonkian Drive, Manteo.
