MANTEO– David Pugh Farrow Sr., 87, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016. He was a”Native Son,” born in Manteo, and was most well-known for his love offamily and of his hometown. David was also a true animal lover. Hewould often be seen riding around in Manteo with his dogs, Drake orSally. David always loved to tell stories of his travels and of Manteo.He was elected in 1997 Commissioner of the Town of Manteo and servedfor 16 consecutive years. While commissioner, David promoted thebuilding of Marshes Lighthouse, the skate park, the town clock, namingpart of Manteo “Old Town,” and helped facilitate improvements to thecemetery. He served on the Dare County Tourism Board for many years.David was named the Dare Day Citizen of the Year in 2009. In 2014 hewas the grand marshal of the Christmas Parade. The Town of Manteodedicated the waterfront playground in his name in 2015.
Davidwas a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church and a member of theMasonic Lodge. David honorably served his country for 20 years byenlisting in the United States Coast Guard at the young age of 17. Hewas a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War,retiring as Chief Engineman (E-7). After retirement, he became alicensed officer in the United States Merchant Marines.
He was the son of the late John Griggs Farrow and Louisa Parker Farrow.
David is survived by his four children, Roxie Farrow Pritchard andhusband, Rufus; David “Crockett” P. Farrow Jr.; Johnny L. Farrow andwife, Sara; and Juliann “Julie” Farrow Bliven and husband, Allen, allof Manteo; 12 grandchildren, Jimmy Boyette; Dee Johnson; Millie O’Neal;Ricki, Richard and Michael Burrus; Davis, Patrick and Sarah Pritchard;and Andrew, Sophia and Helen Farrow; 13 great-grandchildren; and twogreat-great-granddaughters. David is also survived by his sister, HelenFarrow Gaskins; niece, Sharon Gaskins Hatchell; nephew, Buddy Gaskins;and first cousin, Betty Ann Farrow O’Neal, all of Manteo.
Along with his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife,Camilla “Mickey” Cudworth Farrow; daughter, Camilla “Millie” BurrusLutz; and son, Richard O. “Dickie” Burrus.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church with Rev. Kenny Midgett and Rev.John Dutton officiating. Immediately following the service ,the familywill receive friends and relatives for a reception in the church socialhall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or the David Farrow Playground fund.
