KITTY HAWK — Dolores Faye VanCuren, 89, of Kitty Hawk NC died peacefully on December 20, 2023. Dolores was born on February 7, 1934, in Durham, NC, to Genie Scott Self and Lottie Inez Lanier. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a grandson, Michael David VanCuren, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Alvin C. VanCuren, and three sons, Michael D. VanCuren, and spouse, Madonna of Kitty Hawk, NC, Dennis W. VanCuren and spouse, Anne of Maryville, TN, and B. Keith VanCuren of Greenville, NC. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Dolores was raised in Portsmouth, VA where she attended Woodrow Wilson High School and lived until 1970. She was a stay-at-home mom and devoted her time and energy to raising her three sons.
In 1970, she and her husband moved to the Outer Banks and pursued a long career in the hospitality business. Their first notable restaurant was the Ebb Tide Motel and Restaurant. She could be found greeting customers at many well-known restaurants on the Outer Banks, such as The Steak and Egger, The Dunes, The Sportsman, The Ships Wheel and lastly, Jarvisburg Junction. She took great pride in owning and operating these respected restaurants and was loved by customers and employees alike. After retirement, she once again devoted her time to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which brought her much joy. She touched so many lives and will be truly missed by everyone.
At her request, there will be no public service. Her family will have a celebration of life in February for her birthday. Dolores had requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
