Gwendolyn Gray Evans

HATTERAS — Gwendolyn Gray Evans (“Gwenie”) passed away at the age of 87 years old on February 21, 2025, in her home in Hatteras Village. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Thelma Gray, and the sister of the late Miller Gray.

She is survived by her sister, Sandra Basnett, daughter-in-law Candy Evans (belated son, Bill), son-in-law Alan Parsons (belated daughter, Terri), granddaughter Kristen Talbert (Scott), grandson Teran Parsons (Allie), grandson William Evans, and four great-grandchildren (Koa, Miller, Gwendolyn, Reef). She also leaves behind her lifelong best friend, Winona Burroughs.

Gwenie was a native and lifelong resident of Hatteras Island where she loved to live. As a young woman, you could find her in many of Aycock Brown’s photos documenting life in Hatteras in the 1950s. For many years, she worked at Village Marina, and later in life, she served her community as a dispatcher for the Dare County Sheriff’s Department.

She could often be found playing mahjong with friends, reading a good book, or watching her favorite Hallmark movie. She often loved to give gifts to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held in Hatteras Village at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad or Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department.

Special thanks to Kathy Robinson, Kim Gray, and family for all their help during Gwenie’s final days.
