MANTEO — Jamie Miller Horning, age 61, of Manteo, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. A Wanchese native, she was born on December 30, 1963, to the late Lynda Gallop and Captain James Miller.
To call Jamie a fighter is an understatement. She fought harder than any marlin whipping its head back and forth, or any human being ever could. She far exceeded her doctor’s expectations at every turn. She loved fiercely and put everyone else’s needs before her own. She would glow when she talked about her children, Heather’s college degrees, Jimmie’s latest catch, or Ava’s dancing. She was a kind and caring friend. Everyone who got to love her felt themselves lucky. God broke the mold with Jamie Horning. She is irreplaceable, but those of us who loved her will still get to see her in the sparkle on the waves, in the sea foam on the tideline. She was like a great blue marlin you couldn’t ever catch, no matter how hard you tried. She left us all with a legacy: Fight like Jamie.
Jamie is survived by her husband, Captain James “Jim” Horning; a daughter, Heather Bridges; a son, Captain James “Jimmie” Horning Jr.; a stepson, Chief Adam Preiser (Emilie); and grandchildren Ava Tisch and Cormick, Banks, and Quill Preiser. Also surviving are her two sisters, Tena Stetson and Kimberly “Kim” Miller; nephews Ryan Vance and Joel Stetson; niece, Tiah Stetson; aunts, Brenda Swain, Judy Lawrence (Jack), Margie Tillett (Justin), and Nellie Sawyer; an uncle, Lonnie Miller (Brenda); great-nieces, Ryleigh and Nyla; a great-nephew Thomas; and the resulting abundant limbs of her family tree. Alongside an intimate group of friends whom she considered family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Otto Bridges.
