MANTEO — Nelson Franklin Tinnell, 92, of Manteo, NC, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025, at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. He was born on May 12, 1932, in Schuyler, VA, to the late Gracie Dewey Barber and Howard Frank Tinnell.
Nelson served in the United States Navy, enlisting on January 11, 1952, as a seaman recruit and advancing to Gunner’s Mate (missiles) Petty Officer Third Class until January 5, 1956. Following his honorable service, he dedicated many years as a utilities service worker for the City of Richmond, Virginia.
Nelson loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and working on small engines. His daughter referred to him as a seed whisperer. He would save seeds from vegetables and grow plants the next season. His love of fixing small engines led him to help neighbors and friends.
He lived in Manteo for seven years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia Tinnell.
Nelson’s memory will be cherished by his daughter, Sharon Tinnell, and Sandra Shull, along with his grandson, Kris Young; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Keegan, and Peaches Young; sister, Shirley Behrens; and brother, John Tinnell.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will take place at 12:00 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Richmond, VA.
