KILL DEVIL HILLS — Robert “Rob” Williams Black III, born on May 28, 1967, in Raleigh, NC, passed away suddenly on March 1, 2025, in Kill Devil Hills, NC, at the age of 57. A talented carpenter and electrician, Rob’s hands were always busy crafting and creating, but his heart found solace in music and nature.
Rob graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School and attended N.C. State University, where he spent countless hours honing his skills. Beyond his professional life, Rob was an avid guitarist, finding joy in the melodies he created. He was also a passionate outdoorsman who loved fishing and had a keen interest in catching turtles, salamanders, and snakes, embodying his deep love for nature.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Margaret Darden Black and Robert Williams Black, Jr., Rob is survived by a loving family who cherished his warmth and kindness. He is survived by his sister, Michelle Black Barger, and her husband, Randall, of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother, Robert Huber, and his wife, Debbie, of Knoxville, TN; his niece, Ashton Huber; his daughter Faith Cummins; as well as his aunts and uncles, Emmie and John Iliopoulos of Holly Springs, NC, Billie and James Watson of Raleigh, NC, and Nancy and David Stewart of Raleigh, NC. Rob’s legacy extends to his many cousins: Frank Watson, Elizabeth (Libby) Gilbert, Dimitri Iliopoulos, Olympia Olive, Margaret Mullins, Lydia Brook, Kendal Anne Stewart, Becky Poston, William Black, Jr, Vance Forbes, Jr, and Susan Forbes Watson; and second cousins, Paige Warren, Brian Warren, Barbara (Babs) Warren and Anne Warren.
A service to celebrate Rob’s life will be held at a later date. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes will be spread in Pamlico Sound, KDH, NC and on his mother’s gravesite in Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, Rob’s family kindly requests donations be made to the Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy (arcprotects.org) or the Brain Injury Association of America (biausa.org), causes that resonated deeply with Rob’s interests and experiences.
Rob’s spirit will live on through the memories and stories shared by those who knew and loved him
