Sandra Faye Gray Basnett

FRISCO — Sandra Gray Basnett, a lifelong resident of Hatteras Island, passed away peacefully at ECU Health in Greenville, N.C., on June 2, 2025, in the presence of family. She was 80 years old.

Born on July 24, 1944, Sandra graduated from Cape Hatteras High School and spent much of her life in service to the Hatteras Island community. She worked for several years as a dispatcher for the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, where her steady voice and calm demeanor made her a reliable presence during emergencies and day-to-day operations alike.

Later, Sandra became a familiar face at Village Marina in Hatteras, where she worked as a hospitality manager for over 25 years. Her professionalism, attention to detail, and kindhearted nature made her well-liked by both visitors and locals.

Sandra was a proud member of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club and a devoted participant in many fishing tournaments over the years. She found joy and peace in the salt air, the shoreline, and the spirit of competition that came with her love of the outdoors.

Sandra’s path in life wasn’t always easy, but those who knew her best remember her as a kind, quiet soul who found meaning in the simple rhythms of island life and the relationships she built along the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Basnett; her parents, Thelma Austin Gray and C. Ralph Gray; her sister, Gwendolyn “Gwenie” Gray Evans; and her brother, C. Miller “Bubba” Gray.

She is survived by extended family members and close friends, including her step grandson, George “Buddy” Basnett, and her devoted friend and caregiver, Georganna Johnston, both of whom remained close and actively involved in her care during her later years.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Those who knew her are invited to share stories, memories, and fellowship in her honor.

Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.TwifordFH.com.
