Copper Orville Wright bust stolen and granite mounting base damaged at Wright Brothers National Memorial

Vandalized granite mounting base.

The copper reproduction bust of Orville Wright, located at the foot of the Wright Brothers Monument, was stolen, and the heavy granite base that the bust was mounted to was toppled over and damaged last evening or early this morning.

National Park Service Rangers and local law enforcement officials are investigating this crime. If you have information that could help solve this case, please contact the Dare County Community CrimeLine or the National Park Service’s Investigative Services Branch (ISB).

Big Kill Devil Hill may be closed to visitors for a period of time today while the investigation continues.

  1. Are there not cameras at a place so important as the Wright Brothers National Monument? There are cameras everywhere. Please tell me this awful destruction and theft was caught on a camera and the FBI is going to bust the heathens responsible.
