All Hatteras Island Villages Report Soundside Flooding with Onset of Storm …WITH VIDEO

Share post:

All seven villages on Hatteras Island reported soundside flooding by noon on Friday with the onset of a winter storm that is expected to linger through the weekend.

Roads were on the verge of impassable in many areas of N.C. Highway 12, especially in north Avon and the tri-villages, where vehicles were struggling to get through.

NCDOT reported at around 10 a.m. on Friday that the area from Rodanthe to Avon is experiencing very high soundside flooding with the entire width of NC 12 covered with flood waters.

From Rodanthe to the Bonner Bridge, many sections are covered with sand and some water, and travel along this section is also hazardous.

Soundside flooding began at around 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning and is expected to continue and / or stick around throughout the day and into early Saturday.

Per the Friday morning briefing from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office, winds are expected to peak today though tonight, but we will remain strong through the weekend. Wind gusts of up to 62 mph are forecast from Ocracoke to Rodanthe. A 58 mph gust was already reported at around 7:55 a.m. in Hatteras village

Oceanside flooding is also forecast over the weekend and is most likely Saturday through Monday, with peak seas of up to 20 feet.
