Highway 12 Impassable in Multiple Locations as Oceanside Flooding Batters Hatteras Island …WITH SLIDE SHOW

Share post:

N.C. Highway 12 was impassable in multiple locations throughout Hatteras Island as of 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, as oceanside flooding continued to inundate the area.

In south Avon, the oceanside flooding extended from the southern town borders all the way to the intersection of Highway 12 and Avon village, and a number of vehicles initially trying to get through were parked at local business parking lots.

Due to extreme ocean overwash, N.C. Highway 12 is also temporarily closed in between Rodanthe and the Bonner Bridge, and the NCDOT reports that closures and delays are now expected to last into early Monday morning.

It was also reported that other hotspots prone to oceanside flooding in Buxton and Mirlo Beach in Rodanthe were experiencing extreme issues as of Sunday morning, and residents and visitors are advised to avoid travel on Sunday until conditions clear.

The oceanside flooding is expected to continue to be an issue throughout the day, with the highest water levels around high tide. The next high tide is at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

North winds from the weekend storm will remain gusty today along the coast, however they will be weaker than yesterday. The main concern for Sunday is the very large surf off the Outer Banks, leading to a threat of significant beach erosion and continual ocean overwash in spots north of Cape Hatteras. Max wave heights up to 21 feet are forecast.
