Security training exercise is Aug. 3 at Hatteras-Ocracoke terminals
Local, state and federal agencies will conduct a security training exercise at the Hatteras and Ocracoke ferry terminals on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The exercise will begin at approximately 8 a.m. The public may see first responder and federal law enforcement activity at the both ferry terminals.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is participating in this program with the Transportation Security Administration’s Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) team. Local law enforcement agencies and emergency services will also be involved. This is an exercise in which local and federal agencies work together to supplement existing security resources.
The program has been implemented at various transportation modes and facilities across the nation over the past few years. This exercise was not planned as a response to any current threat or specific security concerns, but is intended to promote preparedness and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and first responders.
The exercise is not expected to interrupt the ferry schedule.
