Severe High Tide Affects Highway 12

Share post:

Canal (on Pea Island): Spotty locations, 6-8 inches of water covering some of the roadway.

New Inlet (on Pea Island): 6-8 inches of water covering most of the roadway.

Mirlo Beach area (Rodanthe): 6-8 inches of water covering the roadway

Avon (particularly near Food Lion): 6-8 inches of water covering the roadway

Frisco & Hatteras: Many areas of soundside flooding – 6-8 inches deep covering roadways.

Ocracoke Island: Roadway damage in the stacking lanes at the South Dock Ferry Terminal continues. No effect on the traveling public, as lines can form outside of damaged areas

Tides are affecting the water depths so they could still vary. Northwest winds continue to drive sound water into many areas. This is expected to continue through tomorrow given the forecast.

Secondary roadways that have been affected by ocean overwash have NOT been cleared. NCDOT hopes to begin work on those tomorrow.

NCDOT crews will also need to fully check all routes and ensure that all roadways are safe after the water recedes. NCDOT hopes to be able to do that on Thursday.
