Coastal Storm Expected to Bring Wind, Rain and Possible Flooding Starting Sunday
A coastal storm is forecast for the Outer Banks beginning on Sunday, with possible flooding, beach erosion, large waves, heavy rains, and gusty winds forecast for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, per a Friday morning briefing from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Rough surf and coastal flooding are primary concerns with the storm, and up to one foot above ground soundside flooding and 1-2 feet above ground oceanside flooding is possible. Maximum wave heights of 17 feet is also forecast, and a Gale Watch has been issued for eastern North Carolina coastal waters, sounds, and rivers.
Heavy rains will also accompany the storm, with 2-3 inches of rain forecast for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands. In addition, maximum wind gusts of up to 51 mph are forecast for Sunday through Monday, and significant beach erosion and ocean overwash is expected during the storm.
